All are invited to serve here!

Whether you prefer volunteering in a relational or task oriented capacity, the Downtown Hope Center has several volunteer opportunities available to a variety of people.  We do believe every volunteer opportunity can lead to a ministry opportunity and welcome people to share the triune gospel as the Spirit leads.

Volunteer of the Month

VOM-4.png

Tom has been serving dinners at the Downtown Hope Center since the summer of ‘24, with his church, Trinity Presbyterian Church (TPC). Additionally, TPC has been donating produce to DHC for the last 10 years from their children’s garden, which Tom oversees. Tom started volunteering at soup kitchens as a student attending UAF; he finds it very fulfilling.

What Tom enjoys the most about Downtown Hope Center is both the professionalism of how DHC is operated, as well as working alongside the staff and volunteers: “They are all dedicated to their activities and interact well with their clients.”

Tom encourages others to get involved by sharing how he sees the gratitude from both staff and clientele for the services that volunteers provide. In addition, he believes that it’s a good opportunity to see that the homeless are just like anyone else and that they are just going through a difficult time in their lives.

Roman’s 12:21, which states: “Do not become overcome by evil but overcome evil with good” is Tom’s favorite bible verse; “it emphasizes action, which is a fundamental part of the social gospel.”

Although Tom has many favorite quotations, one that stands out is – “For it is not the flesh that is real, but the soul is flame.” – Victor Hugo.

We so appreciate Tom’s very kind presence and humility in serving at the Downtown Hope Center. Thank you, Tom, for your sincere dedication in being a beacon of hope to those we have a privilege of serving in our community; May God bless you immensely.
